How to Buy Gifts For Your Guy

Now I know we're getting close to the holidays, and I know that everybody is probably worrying about what they are going to get their significant guy for the holidays. Well, I'm going to help you out, and give you a definitive guide to getting guys presents. As always, Your Mileage May Vary. Check it out after the jump!
(like a bear hat my sister got for me 3 years ago)

Guys are really easy to get gifts for. I swear, it is so easy. All you need to do is a little research.

Figure out what he's into. You should probably know what this is, but figure out the intricacies, and get him something small and memorable. Does he like to play golf? Get him a golf head cover. Does he love college sports. Get him a framed picture of his favorite stadium. Does he like to cook a lot? Get him an apron that says "Kiss The Chef". You don't need to go extravagant with the gifts. The littlest thing from you can have the greatest impact without breaking your bank. With that in mind:

Make something homemade. A scarf you knitted is a great gift, sure to keep him warm during the cold months. If you're good with arts and crafts, make a sculpture of his team's mascot or his favorite video game character, or if you're an artist, do a drawing. Your guy will love the effort you put in, and he's sure to appreciate it.

If he is into video games, do special research! Since this is a video game blog, you didn't think I wasn't going to talk about them, did you? You can choose to get your guy a game. There is nothing wrong with this. However, you need to make sure of several things!

  • Make sure you get the right system. The current generation of game consoles are PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, and the Nintendo 3DS. He might have an older console like a Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3. Make sure you know what your guy has, and what he spends most of time on, in case he has multiple consoles.
  • Note what games he has. If he's like me, he has his games in a easy to manage place where you can see all of them. Don't get him a game he already has (If you happen to get him a game one of his friends gets him for Christmas, don't worry about this. He should think it's sweet you were on the same page. And plus, its nothing receipts can't fix.)
  • If you want to earn some bonding time, get him a game you can play together. If your guy has a Playstation console, get the Little BigPlanet series. They are easy to pick up, fun, and allow you to explore your creativity together. Another great suggestion are anyone of the Lego games. They may seem childish because of Legos, and it is a little. However, the games themselves are fun and simple to pick up, and some of the puzzles are actually challenging. Plus the story in these games has great dialogue. These games are a great way to put a spin on a movie date in your house. My personal favorites are the Lego Batman trilogy, Lego Marvel, and Lego Star Wars, but there's also Harry Potter if you both fancy wizardry. These games are available for pretty much any console made in the last decade, so you should be able to find a Lego game easily.
  • If you just want to go for the top game, I've compiled the big recent games he may have missed out on (ie no Call of Duty, Madden, or GTA):
    • PlayStation 4: Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Last of Us: Remastered (Incredible story, easy to pick up), Rayman: Legends, Diablo : Evil Remastered Edition (Great multiplayer, easy to pick up), Shadow of Mordor, Wolfenstien: The New Order, Little Big Planet 3
    • Xbox One: Dragon Age: Inquisition, Diablo : Evil Remastered Edition (Great multiplayer, easy to pick up), Shadow of Mordor, Sunset Overdrive, Wolfenstien: The New Order, Rayman: Legends, Dead Rising 3, Project: Spark
    • Wii U: Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, Super Smash Bros
    • Xbox 360: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Payday 2, Bioshock: Infinite, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter IV
    • PlayStation 3: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Bioshock: Infinite, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter IV
    • Wii: uhh.. does he have a DS?
    • 3DS: Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Bravely Default, Animal Crossing: New Leaf
There's nothing wrong with gift cards! Especially if you don't know what video game to get him, give him the option to choose. They sell gift cards for every game system's online store, and we can go get the game we want (especially now that more and more quality games are being released online). They also sell Battle.net gift cards for the Warcraft/Starcraft/Hearthstone junkie in your life. And of course, an Amazon card doesn't hurt, as that can get just about anything. You may feel like this is a cop-out and the easy road, but for me, the ability to choose what I want is a great gift, and then I feel like she really picked out the gift I wanted. I don't know, maybe that's just me.

Watches and Jackets never hurt if all else fails. I may be basing this off of our relationship, but I have no clue how fashion works and what looks good, so I often defer to Melissa's taste as to what looks good. Of course make sure you know what your guy likes and what makes him feel comfortable, as we value comfiness over whether it looks good (source: my favorite pair of sweatpants with 3 holes in them). Other great go-to gifts are watches and wallets. Every guy loves a new wallet or watch. They're like purses and earrings for guys, only we never know when to give up our old ones, and one from the lady in his life makes it that much more special.

So hopefully this guide was helpful, and you can get the guy in your life the perfect gift this holiday season! But I'm sure that your guy wants nothing more than to spend a holiday season with you, so anything you get him, he is sure to love.

And as always, since I can't leave you without music, here's a new track by Elephante. This track really deserves it's own post, but I'm throwing it in here to make the post more awesome. Give it a listen!

Have a great weekend!
